2005 chrysler 300 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, bold rear-wheel-drive sedan. Hemi available. introductionfor some time chrysler has been threatening to re-invent the sedan back to the way it used to be. And now they've done it. The all-new 2005 chrysler 300 is the first big rear-wheel-drive sedan to come out of chrysler in many years. It replaces the front-wheel-drive lh line, which chrysler has used for years. Back then, there were engineering cases for front-wheel drive, including reduced manufacturing costs and more compact packaging. But new technology has made rear-wheel drive preferable again. Traction control, electronic stability programs, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake distribution all improve the driver's ability to control the car. And one thing hasn't changed: rear-wheel drive is much better than front-wheel drive for managing horsepower. The 300c, which comes with a 340-horsepower hemi v8, is too powerful for front-wheel drive.  the 300 might be a case of back to the future, but there's little that's retro about it, except maybe the giant grille, with a shape like the 1958 300c. There have been some successful chrysler 300s along the way, but nothing to match the impact of the '55.  one of the advantages of front-wheel drive is traction in snow, but that too has been erased over the years. All-wheel drive will be available for drivers who want more traction.  the chrysler 300's styling is distinctive, and its interior is roomy, efficient and stylish. The instrument panel and switchgear are easy to read and operate. Pieces of mercedes-benz are slipping into chrysler cars nowadays, and the 300c features a mercedes-like steering wheel, leather under an arc of wood at the top.  while the 5. 7-liter hemi grabs the headlines, there are 2. 7- and 3. 5-liter v6 engines available. A standard chrysler 300 with a 2. 7-liter v6 can be had for the eye-popping low price of $23,595 including destination. It's a large, modern, stylish, comfortable car for a small price. The 340-horsepower hemi has to carry 4046 pounds, so it won't run with a corvette, but it is plenty fast, with a 0-60 time of 6. 3 seconds, according to chrysler. At the same time, the ride is smooth, solid and comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. With a base price less than $33,000, that's a killer car. lineupthere are three engines available: a 2. 7-liter v6, a 3. 5-liter v6, and the 5. 7-liter v8 hemi. The base chrysler 300 22,970) comes with a 2. 7-liter double-overhead-cam v6 engine making 190 horsepower and 190 feet-pounds of torque, and getting 21/28 epa miles per gallon. It gets 17/25 mpg on 89 octane recommended (87 acceptable). It also has bigger and more powerful front brakes, because the engine is some 300 pounds heavier than the v6 and the car is considerably faster. The hemi engine was brutally tested by chrysler engineers, and is covered by chrysler's 7-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty.  options include front and rear curtain airbags, boston acoustics premium sound system, air filtration, ultrasonic rear object detection, self-sealing tires, hands-free cellphone capability, adjustable pedals, premium sound system, gps navigation system, sirius satellite radio, sunroof, walnut interior accents and xenon high-intensity headlamps. walkaroundthe new chrysler is clearly bold and, we would argue, cool. But mostly the styling is uncompromising and makes no apologies. Rear-wheel-drive architecture allowed this whole new shape. The wheelwell cutouts, wrapping around five-spoke 17-inch or 10-spoke 18-inch wheels, are striking. The wheelbase is very long but the overhangs are short, offering a visual sense of power. The roof rakes thickly down to a short deck, and the sides are like large slabs. The long hood glides forward and drops off a cliff whose face is the massive grille, so strong it dictates the car's lines. interiorthe interior of the chrysler 300 is marked by spacious silence. Chrysler engineers have been reducing interior and wind noise with all their new vehicles, so it's not surprising that the flagship sedan should get the treatment. Chrysler has its own $36 million aero-acoustic wind tunnel, and they've been trying to get their money's worth out of it.  it's a very clean cockpit. We felt blessed not to have to play games with the controls and switchgear to get them to function. Because the windshield rake is relatively modest, visibility forward is enhanced over that very long hood. Visibility out the rear is also excellent, without much intrusion from the roofline.  the cabin is roomy, thanks largely to the efficient shape of the exterior: the chassis is pushed out to the wheels, and the wheelbase is long, leaving 106. 6 cubic feet (sae standard) inside. A safety innovation can be found in the trunk. The well in the cargo floor, holding the spare tire, is built at an angle, so if the 300 is crashed into from the rear, the tire will rotate upward allowing the frame structure to deform as designed. driving impressionthe 300c feels as solid as it looks, having inherited significant mechanicals from its parent company, mercedes-benz. From a handling standpoint, the 300 is heavily and positively influenced by a design borrowed from the mercedes e-class: five-link rear suspension mounted to a subframe, and the short-arm/long-arm front suspension, modified for the 300's longer wheelbase, wider track and bigger wheels.  the ride in the 300c is very smooth and solid without any weakness that we could find in a half day of hard driving, and we wouldn't change a thing. The 120-inch wheelbase is longer even than that in the chrysler 300s from the 1950s, but the overall length is not. Nor is it longer than the front-wheel-drive 04 chrysler it replaces. Result: great ride, reasonable parking.  and the cornering is good enough that higher-performance tires should be made available. The 300c comes with continental all-season tires, p225/60r18, but they squeal early and don't do justice to the chassis. Chrysler engineers have gotten the rack-and-pinion steering right; it's just the right amount of weighty, and provides a secure feeling. 2010 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The blue model shares with other elantra models a more efficient alternator system and lower-friction engine components. In addition, it has revised transmission gear ratios, engine calibration changes and a shift indicator, and will be identified with blue badging. We found the front seats very comfortable. The ride is good, although a bad freeway with relentless sharp bumps is more than the elantra can accept without passing on some of the annoyance to those in the front seats. Optionally available on the blue is a comfort package 1,700) which includes air conditioning, a 172-watt am/fm/cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers, and cruise control.  there are numerous dealer-installed accessories, including a rear spoiler 375), bluetooth connectivity 325), floor mats 95), a cargo tray 70), and mud guards 85).  elantra gls 16,895) adds the automatic transmission, air conditioning, tinted windshield, sunvisor with illuminated passenger vanity mirror, cruise control, fog lamps, and the 172-watt sound system with six speakers. Options for the gls include a sunroof 900), and a navigation package 1,100) which includes navigation, bluetooth, and steering-wheel audio controls. The gls can also be fitted with all the dealer-installed accessories available for the blue version.  the se 17,845) is the upgrade model and adds p205/55r16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, trip computer, electronic stability control with traction control, and brake assist. A premium package 1,150) includes a power sunroof and heated front seats. The premium plus navigation package 2,000) is the premium package plus navigation and bluetooth. It also includes cupholders in the rear armrest, and the rear seat is split 60/40 and folds down to provide more space for hauling larger items. All models except the blue and gls sedan also include standard electronic stability control (esc) with traction control and brake assist; the esc system is not available with the blue or gls sedan model. walkaroundthe hyundai elantra sedan was designed by americans in hyundai's california studio, and is a good-looking compact.  the elantra received a lot of careful design work, and could almost pass for being seamless. That quality fitting also reveals itself in the smooth opening and closing of the doors.  the elantra sedan's good looks move this korean compact car toward the world of the stylish. Its sculpture is clean, with a high beltline running along at the body-colored door handles. It has a subtle face, with trapezoidal headlamps having rounded edges, leading down and into the grille with horizontal chrome bars. At the bottom of the fascia is a long, slim air intake. It lacks definitive fender flares because it doesn't need them; the elantra doesn't shout to be seen. At the front, the headlights have a more stylized shape that wraps up and over and around the corners. Below the edge of the hood is a thin opening with the hyundai emblem in the center, and then below that is a large trapezoidal opening that is flanked by prominent foglamps. At the rear are large, vertical taillamp units that should be easy to see by just about anyone, thus enhancing safety. There's an especially large dead pedal to support the driver's left foot. The radio control knobs are blessedly simple, like radio knobs should be.  in the rear, there is 35 inches of leg room, along with good hip room. There is also a large trunk. For carrying cargo, the rear seatbacks fold down to allow a pass-through into the trunk.  storage compartments are abundant. There's a neat box inside the top of the dash, and a sunglasses container in the headliner. The fixed door pockets have built-in bottle holders. Below the three climate control knobs there's a small companion to the glovebox and, below that and forward of the shift lever, there's also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver's elbow.  generally, the interior is notably quiet, for a compact car. 2007 dodge nitro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size suv. introductionthe 2007 dodge nitro is an all new mid-size suv. Dodge redesigned the full-size durango in 2004, and since then has been planning the nitro, which is 22 inches shorter. There are many mid-size suvs out there, and dodge wanted the nitro to be distinctive, in order to keep up its reputation for bold styling. The result is a very squared-off vehicle, with exaggerated fender flares.  the nitro looks and feels larger than its size, with a high seating position that suv owners like, and good cabin space. It features load 'n' go, a cargo storage system whereby the rear seats and front passenger seat fold totally flat in seconds; additionally, the cargo floor slides rearward out over the rear bumper, and can hold 400 pounds, making the loading of heavy objects much easier. The new 4. 0-liter v6 is better than the old 3. 7-liter, with 50 more horsepower and fuel economy that's only one or two miles per gallon less. However the 4. 0-liter engine only comes in the top-of-the-line r/t model, which costs about $2700 more than the most popular slt. No matter which covering, the seats are very comfortable. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, remote entry with power windows and door locks, 115-volt power outlet, flat folding front passenger seat, 60/40 folding rear bench seat, am/fm/cd with mp3 and six speakers, tilt steering column, traction control and brake assist, slate-colored molded front and rear fascias and fender flares, folding power mirrors, rear window washer/wiper, and 16-inch steel wheels.  the slt 22,635) and slt 4wd 24,145) come standard with the automatic. The slt adds stain-resistant cloth seats, power six-way adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, load 'n go cargo storage system with tie-down rails, overhead console, cruise control, heated mirrors, compass, auto-dimming rearview mirror, vehicle information instrumentation, tinted windows, body-colored front and rear fascias and fender flares, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the r/t 25,310) features a new 4. 0-liter v6 making 260 horsepower, mated to a five-speed automatic. The r/t comes with a sports suspension with 20-inch wheels and goodyear eagle tires. The r/t is equipped like the slt, though it also has sirius satellite radio.  options for all three models include a power sunroof, foglamps, engine block heater, full-size spare tire, and trailer tow package. Full-time 4wd is an option on the part-time 4wd sxt and slt models. Options for the slt and r/t include leather upholstery, navigation system, remote start, hands-free phone, am/fm/6cd/cd/dvd/mp3 sound system with eight speakers plus subwoofer. The optional mygig multimedia infotainment system features navigation, audio, entertainment and communication wrapped into one, along with voice command and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to store music and photos. walkarounddodge publicity makes a big thing about the nitro's looks, citing its so-called athleticism. We might call it brawny, but mostly it just looks boxy. The exaggerated fender flares are the only rounded parts in the styling. Every other angle is square-ish. It looks and feels larger than mid-size, which some will find to be a good thing.  from the front, it's unmistakably dodge. It's got that big crosshair grille, which looks much better in body color (r/t) than chrome (sxt, slt). It's intended to look like a cooling slot. It's a nice touch, and for such a small piece it goes a long way toward relaxing the nitro's blocky shape.  in silhouette, with its relatively upright windshield, very high beltline and rectangular windows, plus short front overhang, its shape is reminiscent of, say, a '62 dodge power wagon. But from the rear three-quarter angle, the lines around the rear glass are reminiscent of its bigger cousin, the jeep commander. The much narrower sidewall on the 20-inch tires doesn't appear to offer much defense against flats. interiorthe sxt comes in a basic cloth, but the cloth in the slt and r/t is something called yes essentials; it claims to repel stains, control odors and reduce static electricity. There are three big main instruments: speedo in center, tach on right and fuel and temp on left. They're very good looking and especially legible, with the digital information still visible in the sun because the three pods are thoughtfully shrouded. Chrysler does gauges right, and generally blows gm out of the water when it comes to handsome style and function.  there's good front seat legroom, and it feels like there's even more because the dashboard is narrow, making the cabin feel nothing like that in a minivan. The dash also has an insert over the center stack, about 6 by 9 inches with grippy rubber at the bottom, and it's perfect for, well, things. The glovebox is the full width of the passenger side.  rearview visibility is very good, with just windows back there, no attempt at swoopy styling with sheetmetal. And again, because the front fenders have no rise or real shape, it's easy to see the front corners of the vehicle, making parking a relief compared to many vehicles this size.  the square theme continues with the center stack and its instruments and buttons for the sound system and climate control, although nowadays many cars look like that, which isn't bad, just almost natural. Everything is clean, easy to operate, and easy to understand. There's a shallow tray in the top of the center console storage bin, and a deep compartment under that; as one lady on the press launch said, it's big enough to stash her cat, on road trips.  but the nitro really rises to the occasion behind the front seat. The load 'n go function quickly and easily flops the 60/40 rear seats and front passenger seat totally flat. With the liftgate raised, the carpeted (washable vinyl on the sxt) cargo floor slides rearward 18 inches, out over the bumper, saving a loader's back. The 3. 7-liter engine is rather harsh-sounding, but the nitro's sound-deadening material muffles it well.  finally, the air conditioning might be fine on a normal hot day, but it seemed marginal for searing conditions. We drove from san diego to palm springs on a september day, and when we got there it was 104 degrees. The ac was going full blast, and it wasn't doing the job. The fan was blowing strong, but the air coming out of the vents wasn't cold enough to cool the cabin. driving impressionafter long driv. 2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standing like a rock against new competition. introductionthe choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the chevrolet silverado and the gmc sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, toyota has added a crew cab model to its tundra line, and nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan. There isn't a dog among them. All are superb in their own way.  yet silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable.  for 2005, most silverados come with wider, lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels, promising better handling than before. Short-box extended cabs with 4wd now offer a more powerful all-alumium v8, while a gas/electric hybrid option promises lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 include dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado models are cruise control, cd player, a step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. The w/t (work truck) package, intended primarily for commercial and municipal fleet sales, deletes these niceties for an average credit of $1,600.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $25,265) adds a long list of comforts and appointments, including power windows, locks and mirrors; upgraded audio and upholstery; and the 4. 8-liter v8 with automatic transmission. Ls crew cabs come with the 5. 3-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $32,965) is downright luxurious, with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, bose audio, and a new version of the onstar telematics system. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on all lt models.  the z71 off-road package includes full ls trim, plus special off-road suspension, locking rear differential, p265/70r17 on/off-road tires, skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, wheel flares, fog lamps, and deep-tinted glass.  silverado ss is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 1,100). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs.  silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl.  optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information, i. 2010 chrysler 300 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It has great styling, impressive handling and, with the available hemi v8 of 360 horsepower, pavement-eating performance. Rear-wheel drive adds to the pleasure and excitement of driving this big sedan, and that's partly why luxury sedans and sports cars continue to use it. The 300's traction and stability electronics are well sorted and effective, delivering good all-season performance, and all-wheel drive is an option for those who want enhanced traction for dealing with slippery conditions. They're also responsive for large cars. Inside and out, this car makes no apologies. It won't be mistaken for any other sedan the road. It can be trimmed with chrome, mono-chrome and various wheels to look stately and elegant or downright intimidating.  the chrysler 300 delivers impressive value, but emphasizing the cost/benefit ratio may minimize its other strengths. The 300 is a highly appealing car, and it has set a benchmark for the industry.  long-wheelbase models are also available. It's equipped with cloth upholstery, power driver's seat, cruise control, fog lamps, and chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The limited awd 37,415) is identically equipped, except that it has the five-speed automatic. Options for the limited include boston acoustic speakers 595), media center 900), and california walnut real wood trim 560).  the 300c 38,010) features the 5. 7-liter overhead-valve hemi v8 delivering 360 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque and fitted with the five-speed automatic. It also has a power tilt/telescoping steering column; 160-mph speedometer; remote starting; memory for driver's seat, exterior mirrors, steering column tilt/telescope, and power adjustable pedals; boston acoustic sound system with 276 watts; performance brakes; dual exhaust; and rain-sensing wipers. The 300c awd 40,050) is equipped the same. Options for the 300c include adaptive cruise control 595), and the luxury equipment group ii 2,190), which includes the adaptive cruise control, exterior mirrors with supplemental turn signals, heated rear seats, boston acoustics sound with seven speakers and 368-watt amplifier, and the california walnut real wood trim.  the srt8 44,865) features a 425-hp, 6. 1-liter hemi v8 with loads of performance tweaks, 20-inch wheels, and unique design features. Options for the srt8 include a 13-speaker kicker srt audio system 685), and srt option group ii, which includes uconnect navigation and uconnect phone. Included as standard equipment with the srt8 is the srt track experience, a one-day driving experience conducted at various race tracks with instruction from the richard petty racing school.  safety features include multi-stage front airbags and head-curtain side airbags. Other safety-related options include rear obstacle detection, high-intensity discharge headlamps, and all-wheel drive.  the w. A handful of detractors claim the 300's styling, particularly its bentley-esque front end, is derivative, but we think that's a superficial view. But it also redefined what a detroit sedan can be.  with its rear-wheel-drive architecture, the chrysler 300 might be a case of back to the future. Yet there's little about it that's retro, except maybe the giant grille, which clearly draws on 300s from the past. The first chrysler 300 was introduced in 1955. It was called the c300 and its engine had hemispherical combustion chambers earning the hemi nickname. Its styling makes no apologies. The wheelwell cutouts, wrapping around rims up to 20 inches in diameter, are striking. The wheelbase is long but the overhangs are short, offering a visual sense of power. These cast a useful halo of light on the ground beneath the doors when the 300 is unlocked with the remote key fob. Its unique features include body-color front and rear bumper inserts, mirrors and door handles. The modifications are more than aesthetic: there are ducts to direct air flow to cool the brakes, while a specially designed rear spoiler increases rear downforce by 39 percent, helping keep the rear tires firmly planted at high speed without increasing drag. Yet the coolest thing about the srt8 might be its 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and high-performance tires, which maximize that visual impression of power.   the executive series package, or long-wheelbase version, adds six inches to the standard wheelbase, all behind the front doors, and provides 46 inches of rear legroom inside. Outside, it gives the 300 a stately, limo-like look. interiorthe stylish theme set by the chrysler 300 body carries through inside, though the style in the cabin is even more clearly defined by purpose. There's a definite form-follows-function approach, with little superfluous decoration.  the chrysler 300 was among the first to adapt an increasingly popular high seating position, with seats that are higher than those in a typical sedan. This blueprint was perhaps a response to the booming popularity of sport-util. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Climate Control✔ Cruise Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Aluminum Wheels

2010 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Practical, roomy, value. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a mid-size sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, it competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks contemporary, handsome, and clean. Inside, there's lots of room, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big lid that simplifies loading cargo, and it has a generous capacity. Optional flip-and-fold-forward rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so.  there are three trim levels, ranging from a sensible, reliable, and fuel-efficient family sedan to a more luxurious version with commendable performance and a good complement of features, and the two available v6 engines are dependable, responsive and efficient, while delivering ample performance.  chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. Two important standard features are stabilitrak, general motors' electronic stability control system that includes the function of traction control, and the latest generation of onstar, which will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the call center.  changes for 2010 are few. Options include an engine block heater 75), 40/20/40 front bench seat 195), and a flip-and-fold-forward rear seat 295).  the impala lt 25,055) upgrades to 16-inch aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls and more interior conveniences. Options include leather upholstery 1,125), sunroof 900), universal garage door opener 100), and rear spoiler 275).  the impala lt luxury edition package 2,270) includes leather trim, an upgraded onstar with directions and connections and turn-by-turn navigation, heated front seats, six-way power front passenger's seat, bose premium eight-speaker audio system, flip-and-fold-forward rear seat, and a rear spoiler.  the impala ltz 29,630) comes standard with the equipment of the lt, plus the 238-horsepower 3. 9-liter v6 engine and the fe3 performance suspension. Standard wheels are 18-inch machined alloys with p235/55r18 tires.  safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front airbags, side-curtain roof-mounted airbags for front- and rear-seat passengers, thorax side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), stabilitrak with traction control and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundthe impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  the big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  aside from minor badging, the only exterior differentiations among the trim levels are the wheels and the standard rear spoiler on the ltz. interiorthe impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The standard seats have fairly firm cushions and decent lumbar support compared to previous models. A twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average.  the dual-zone climate control system is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  the base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium audio system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down, and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions.  the 3. 5-liter e85-compatible v6 that's standard on the ls and lt has variable valve timing and generates 207 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. It gets an epa-rated 18/29 mpg city/highway on gasoline and 14/22 city/highway on e85 ethanol.  the 3. 9-liter e85-compatible v6 has variable valve timing and produces 230 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque. The rear suspension uses a multi-link setup with gas-charged struts, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar. Ls and lt models come with the softer fe1 suspension, while the ltz has the performance-tuned fe3 setup and more responsive handling.

2006 toyota camry review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling sedan. introductiontoyota camry outsells all the other midsize cars largely because of toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability. The camry is the perfect transportation appliance, flawlessly performing its duties, never annoying its owner. Its soft suspension smoothes out beat-up city streets. The interior is ergonomically excellent, with big climate and audio knobs that are easy to adjust, and the seats are comfortable.  for 2006, the camry soldiers on virtually unchanged. (an all-new camry is being launched for model year 2007.)  the two-door solara comes in coupe and convertible versions. Both are high-quality cars. As before, the solara is also available with a v6 engine. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard; a five-speed automatic transmission is optional 830).  le is available with a 190-horsepower 3. 0-liter v6 2,405); it comes with the automatic transmission, included in the option price. Se is available with a bigger 3. 3-liter v6 rated at 210 horsepower 2,820), which comes with the five-speed automatic. Note that horsepower ratings for all three engines is lower than last year; this is due to a change in the society of automotive engineers testing procedure used to rate horsepower. The engines themselves are unchanged and just as strong as last year's models.  the base sedan 18,445) comes with air conditioning; cruise control; power windows, mirrors and locks; six-speaker am/fm/cd stereo; a 60/40 split rear seat; abs with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd); and p205/65r15 all-season tires on 15-inch steel wheels.  upgrading to the le 19,545) adds interior brightwork, upgraded cloth upholstery, power driver's seat, remote keyless entry, engine immobilizer, driver-information center and a full-size spare tire. The le v6 22,780) also gets 15-inch aluminum wheels.  camry se 20,375) is a sportier model, with higher-rate springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars, along with higher-effort steering and bigger (16-inch) steel wheels and p215/60 summer-only tires. A three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and lots of bright trim add zing to the interior. The se v6 24,025) adds the engine immobilizer, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and power sunroof.  the xle 22,795) is the most luxurious camry, featuring wood-grain interior trim, power driver and passenger seats, automatic climate control, side-curtain airbags, jbl premium stereo with in-dash six-cd changer, a more advanced driver information center, an alarm system with engine immobilizer, a cargo net, a rear-window sunshade, and p215/60 all-season tires on 16-inch steel rims. The xle v6 25,805) comes with leather seats and fancier gauges and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  the camry solara coupe comes in se, se sport, and sle trim levels. The se v6 coupe 21,860) is similarly equipped. Side curtain airbags are optional.  the solara se sport coupe 21,025) comes with sport-tuned suspension and p215/55r17 all-season tires on 17-inch aluminum wheels; it also gets aggressive exterior appliques; and substitutes graphite and charcoal trim for a lot of the se's interior brightwork. Solara se sport v6 23,355) is similarly equipped.  the solara sle 23,405) is the most luxurious model with automatic climate control, power moonroof, jbl stereo with six-disc cd changer, power seats and woodgrain interior trim. The sle v6 convertible 30,210) is equipped the same as the sle v6 cou. walkaroundoverall, the toyota camry is a solid-looking car, stylish yet conservatively so. The camry presents a sculptured appearance, with slightly flared wheel arches and a distinct dual crease line in the hood, the latter leading nicely into the grille. On sporty se models, the grille is blacked out.  solara shares the sedan's 107-inch wheelbase, but is 3. 3 inches longer overall than the camry, measuring 192. 5 inches from bumper to bumper.  the solara coupe looks like a stylized version of the sedan. It's a more adventurous design. The roofline is sleeker and the rear is totally different from the camry sedan's, reminding us of the lexus sc 430. The arc-shaped theme features a continuous line from the front bumper, over the roof, and down to the rear bumper. Just below the beltline, a character line flows in a gentle s-curve from the teardrop headlamps to the teardrop taillights. The solara looks aerodynamically efficient, and it is, with a drag coefficient of just 0. 29 cd, making it slip through the air much more easily than the previous solara, good for wind noise, gas mileage, and speed. The outside door handles are easy to grab, much better than lever-style handles.  toyota says the convertible's body structure was designed from the ground up for topless motoring, unlike the previous-generation convertible, which was adapted from the then-current coupe. The solara was designed and engineered in the u. And is built in the u. S. interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are straightforward and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply. Optional power-adjustable pedals help shorter drivers find a safer, more comfortable driving position, by permitting them to move the pedals closer to them and sit farther from the airbag-armed steering wheel.  radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on base, se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate controls with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big tuning and volume knobs and big buttons that make it easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. We found the audio quality on the available jbl sound system a bit lacking, however.  we found the optional navigation system easy to use and it recalculates quickly. It's available as a stand-alone option for 2006 and we recommend getting it.  the instruments are located in a relatively small pod directly in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches.  the camry dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have made the passenger-side air bag invisible.  a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the base and le is located in the center console, whereas the se and xle get foot-operated parking brakes.  rear-seat passengers will find the camry's accommodations quite pleasant for a mid-size sedan. The rear seat splits 60/40, allowing long objects to pass through from the trunk, although the opening is small. The trunk itself is a decent size and shape. Gooseneck hinges steal some space, but are hidden under a cover, reducing the chance that they will damage trunk contents as the lid is closed.  the solara adds a dash of panache with a sweeping console that invokes the intimate atmosphere of a sporty coupe. The seats are relatively flat, which makes sliding in and out easy, but we'd prefer a little more side support. The cloth is nice, though it's a bit bland. But the faux wood in the solara convertible we tested looked like plastic and some of the silver reflective material on the lower ce.

2012 chevrolet cruze review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved fuel economy. introductionthe chevrolet cruze is an excellent choice among compact sedans. It's the best small car gm has offered in north america in decades. More important, it's among the best cars in its class.  fuel economy is improved for 2012, and the list of standard equipment has grown longer, especially in the mid-range lt level. Otherwise, the 2012 chevrolet cruze is unchanged from 2011.  launched as a 2011 model, the cruze replaced the sturdy but boring cobalt, and represented a great leap forward in technology, features and appeal. The cruze was developed jointly by gm tech centers in asia, europe and the united states to battle compact competitors such as the hyundai elantra and kia forte, the best volkswagen jetta in years, and perennial leaders like the honda civic, mazda 3, and toyota corolla. By the quality of materials, fit or function, it surpasses nearly all its competitors. As with most cars in this class, the cruze is front-wheel drive. Both the manual and automatic are 6-speed-transmissions, which is rare in this class. With the 1. 8-liter engine the government rates it 25/36 mpg with the manual, 22/35 mpg with the automatic. The 2012 chevrolet cruze eco rates 28/42 mpg with the manual, 26/39 mpg with the automatic.  the chevrolet cruze might be the smoothest, quietest compact offered in the united states. Ride quality is outstanding, yet the car is nimble, balanced and handles exceptionally well. Its steering is powered by electricity to save fuel. Underway, the steering feels sharp, with decent feel. The cruze comes standard with a long list of safety features, including advanced electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a full complement of 10 airbags. There are knee-protection airbags for front passengers, side-impact airbags for rear passengers, and head-protection curtains with rollover deployment. Every cruze comes with gm's onstar telematics system, including a six-month subscription for automatic accident response and other services, a great safety feature.  among the 2012 cruze models, the cruze eco delivers the best fuel economy. Its aerodynamic features, including grille vanes that close at highway speeds, help it slip through the air more easily, and it weighs more than 200 pounds less than other models. To achieve its superb fuel economy, however, the cruze eco sacrifices performance, resulting in slower acceleration, longer stopping distances, and poorer handling than the other cruze models.  the cruze ltz comes swathed in leather and loaded with technology. The cruze ltz is available with a full-feature navigation system, rear park assist, concierge services, premium pioneer audio and remote starting. For that kind of money, the alternatives include larger, very nicely equipped midsize sedans such as the ford fusion, honda accord, hyundai sonata or nissan altima. Cruze ls comes with air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, floor mats, and six-speaker audio with single cd, an auxiliary jack and xm satellite radio. The standard wheels are 16-inch steel.  cruze eco 19,245) is optimized for fuel economy. It's powered by a smaller, 1. 4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers the same 138 hp as the base engine, with an increase in torque to 148 lb-ft. It's lighter than other cruze models, with aerodynamic aids that make in slipperier through the air, and low-rolling-resistance tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. The 2012 cruze eco comes with bluetooth phone connectivity, usb port, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.  cruise lt 18,475) is powered by the same frugal turbocharged engine plus body-color power side mirrors and all the new goodies that have been added to the cruze eco. Sixteen-inch machined-face alloy wheels are standard on 2012 cruze lt models. The 2012 cruze ltz also comes standard with fog lights, keyless entry and keyless start.  cruze rs is an ltz with an rs appearance package 595), which includes unique bumpers, rocker moldings, and a rear spoiler. A similar package for the lt2 695) adds all that plus fog lights and racier instruments. Navigation 995) is available for lt2, ltz, and eco. Other options include a 250-watt pioneer audio system with nine speakers 445), a power sunroof 900). The eco and lt1 can be spruced up with a driver convenience package 495) that includes a six-way power driver's seat, rear park assist, and remote start. (all prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.)  safety features include front, side-impact and knee-protection airbags for front passengers, rear side-impact airbags and full cabin head-protection curtains with rollover deployment. Gm's onstar telematics are standard, with automatic crash response and other services free for six months. Other standard safety features include stabiltrack electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs), front seatbelt pretensioners, daytime running lights (drls) and the federally mandated tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe styling of the chevrolet cruze is handsome and nicely proportioned.  the cruze is large, as compact cars go. Measuring 181. 0 inches bumper-to-bumper, on a wheelbase of 105. 7 inches, the cruze is slightly larger than most of its competitors, including the honda civic, toyota corolla, and the all-new 2012 ford focus.  cruze is more angular than other recent chevrolet sedans, including the popular malibu. Its front end mimics the volt plug-in sedan with a prominent chevrolet bowtie logo. The headlight housings are large, sweeping upward and around the front edges of the car.  the roofline arcs subtly from its steeply raked windshield through fast-sloping rear pillars, creating a generally sporty profile. Its wheels are pushed out to the corners of the car, with minimal overhang. No, this compact sedan doesn't break new ground or wow with its curves. But it's tidy and quite confidant looking, and the package generates a feeling of quality and solidity. Wheels range from 16-inch steel with plastic covers on the base ls to spoked 18-inch alloys with low-profile tires on the loaded ltz.  the cruze eco is a slightly different beast, because it's designed to be chevrolet's conventional-engine fuel economy leader. The differences start with 42 steps intended to trim weight, right down the size and location of welds in the body. As a result, the eco tips the scales at 3,009 pounds, or 214 pounds less than the mid-level cruze lt. Cruze eco adds a host of aerodynamic tweaks, including some adapted from the chevrolet volt. These start with active grille shutters that close at higher speeds, blocking much of the grille surface when the cooling demands of the engine allow it, and smoothing air flow over the front of the car. The eco also sports a lower front air-dam extension, plastic panels that cover large portions of the underbody and a carefully crafted rear spoiler. It's finished with low-rolling-resistance tires on specially designed rims. That means a bit less braking performance or grip through the corners, but it also means less friction when the eco is cruising along for better fuel economy. interiorthe chevrolet cruze is roomy inside, with ample dimensions in most directions. The cabin is finished nicely with quality materials. Sound deadening measures result in quiet operation. Overall, the cruze cabin delivers an excellent balance of quality, coziness and space to breathe.  cruze is near the top of the class for the look, fit and feel of the materials inside. The seams join with tighter tolerances than those in many other cars, including some of those a class or two above. The textiles and plastics are rich, appealing and nicely grained, and the metallic trim looks good. The fabric used for the door inserts matches that used on the seat.

2008 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. One of ford's best gets better. introductionthe ford escape has been thoroughly updated for 2008, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it america's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. The escape's standard safety features are upgraded significantly for 2008.  we'd call the escape a little truck among small suvs. Its new styling deliberately invokes ford's larger, truck-based expedition and explorer sport-utilities. Escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of best epa mileage ratings in the class. All, including the gas-electric hybrid, are offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. For the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of the typical sedan. Interior storage options have improved considerably. The finish is more upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  safety features that were extra-cost options on lower-trim models are now standard across the board, including ford's roll stability control system. Escape now sets the class benchmark for safety features.  there's a ford escape model for most tastes and needs. Dollar for feature, ford escape prices have dropped considerably the past few years. The premium for the escape hybrid has also decreased. It's now less than $2,000 more than a comparably equipped limited.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels.    the escape xlt 20,880) and xlt 4wd 22,360) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. The cargo convenience group 395) includes a retractable cargo area cover and a compartmentalized rear storage bin. The audiophile package 695) includes a high-power stereo with seven speakers, subwoofer and the in-dash cd changer. The limited luxury package 795) adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and a back-up warning system. The audiophile and navigation package 2,695) includes the stereo upgrade and ford's touch-screen navigation system; in the hybrid, it also adds a meter that graphically and immediately demonstrates the benefits of hybrid drive, and helps the driver maximize fuel economy. Other options include cruise control 225), cd changer 295), a power moonroof 795), floor mats 55), 16-inch alloy wheels 375), 17-inch chromed wheels 695), and a class ii towing package 345).  safety features have been upgraded substantially for 2008, making equipment that was previously optional on lower trim levels standard across the board, and setting the class benchmark for small sport-utilities. Passive safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. Rsc adds a second gyroscopic roll-rate sensor to the typical stability control package, measuring the escape's roll angle and roll rate and applying countermeasures (such as braking one of the wheels or reducing power) to increase rollover resistance. walkaroundthe 2008 ford escape has been re-styled more thoroughly than a quick glance might suggest. None of its major body panels are common to previous models, but the redesign is evolutionary and the most obvious changes are in the details, or jewelry, as designers call them. In an impressionistic way, the new escape will look familiar to those who have owned previous escapes, or those who pay attention to what others drive.  as such, the new escape has the air of a conventional, truck-based suv, with a more rugged look than many other small, sedan-platform sport-utilities such as the honda cr-v. For starters, escape sits a bit higher than many competitors (8. 1 inches of ground clearance), and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the new grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. Escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the trim levels are easy to distinguish from the front of the car. The base escape xls has a chrome grille and body-colored fascia from the bumper down. The xlt is identical, except for prominent fog lights in the front bumper. This adds the chrome grille and more, with brightwork flowing down into the skid plate and bumper. It looks like a big, shiny t on the front of the vehicle.  some changes to the new escape are functional more than aesthetic. The side mirrors are larger than before, but ford claims their shape generates less noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthe 2008 ford escape interior is all new, and we like it. It's not significantly roomier or a leap forward in design, but it's well thought out and well executed. It's a definite improvement in ergonomic function and overall visual appeal, and it makes a nicer place to spend time.  this is one of ford's best interiors in years in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. 2010 chevrolet cobalt review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Attractive price, notable economy, value for the dollar. introductionthe chevrolet cobalt delivers inexpensive, high-value transportation. We find these cars enjoyable to drive and their attractive price and notable fuel economy makes for a compelling package with a lot of value. A heavy-duty five-speed manual is the only transmission available with the ss. The ss is available only as the coupe.  for 2010, chevrolet cobalt changes are few. The my link package includes an am/fm/cd/mp3/usb audio system with bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering-wheel audio controls, onstar directions and connections, and 16-inch alloy wheels. It is not available with air conditioning.  cobalt ls 15,670) sedan and coupe come with air conditioning, wind-up windows and manually operated mirrors. Tires are low-rolling-resistance 195/60r15s on 15-inch steel wheels. Options include an automatic transmission 925) and anti-lock brakes 400).  cobalt lt 16,470) sedan and coupe get upgraded upholstery, adjustable lumbar support for the driver, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, carpeted floor mats front and rear, a console with an adjustable armrest and two 12-volt outlets, and other amenities. Options include cruise control 275), a sun & sound package 995) that includes a sunroof and seven-speaker pioneer audio system, remote vehicle starter 190) for automatic models, heated leather seats 795), and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls and bluetooth wireless connectivity 245). The 2lt package 1,370) includes anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and 205/55r16 tires on alloy wheels. The sport appearance package 995) includes a rear spoiler, larger body-color fascias and rocker moldings, 17-inch polished aluminum wheels with performance tires, chrome exhaust tip, fog lamps, white-face sport gauges, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. A bright chrome appearance package 295) includes a chrome grille, bodyside moldings, door handles, exhaust tip and front and rear fascias.  cobalt ss coupe 24,535) is powered by a 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine and comes with upgraded suspension and brakes, sport seats with suede-like inserts, additional gauges, fog lamps, and spoilers and air dams all around. A heavy-duty five-speed is the only transmission offered. Tires are 225/40r18 on 18-inch forged aluminum wheels. A configurable lcd display allows the driver to select from a variety of performance measurements, including 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration, braking performance and cornering force. Options include sport pedals 165) and a limited-slip differential 495).  onstar, in one form or another, is standard on all models. It also includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, making crash data available to participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate live-saving personnel and equipment.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. Head-curtain side airbags are standard on all models, as is a tire pressure monitor. The ss model has stabilitrak electronic stability control. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on the ss, included in the 2lt option, and optionally available on the lt and ls. walkaroundthe chevrolet cobalt is built on gm's delta platform, which it shares with the european-market opel astra. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, the cobalt looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the cobalt's compound complex headlamps.  the coupe weighs about 50 pounds less than the sedan, a relatively insignificant amount.  the cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors. Its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class.  the cobalt ss is distinguished by its front fascia with integrated air dam and projector-beam fog lights. Upper and lower grilles both sport a specific diamond-mesh texture. Rocker extensions are also unique to the ss, and a rear deck-lid spoiler is standard. The standard spoiler can be replaced with big wing. The rear is finished off with a bright-tip exhaust outlet. interiorthe design theme inside the chevrolet cobalt is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish are good. Overall, it's comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  the cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft travel and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat-height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the optional leather-trimmed seats, which come with electric heat.  inside the ss are sport seats embroidered with the ss-logo and enhanced with suede-like ultralux inserts. A specific gauge package includes an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge.  the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheel that's optional on the cobalt lt is much nicer.  rear-seat passengers pay a price for the coupe's sporty looks. Headroom, legroom, and hip room are reduced by 2 inches, 1. 5 inches, and 3. 5 inches, respectively; enough to make the difference between a comfortable place for adults and one best left to pre-adolescents. Therefore, the coupe is a good choice for drivers who are usually alone or with a friend, while the sedan is the better choice for drivers who often find themselves with two or three passengers.  the trunk in the sedan is wide and deep with a low lift-over height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class, though the opening to the trunk seems relatively small. The trunk lid uses outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts instead of gooseneck hinges that can squash groceries when the lid is closed. The coupe has the same trunk volume but an even smaller trunk opening, making it difficult to stow a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive. It's quiet for a car that can be bought for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. As a result, normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds above 90 mph.  the variable valve timing helps fatten the torque curve through a wide range of engine speeds. Epa-estimated fuel economy with the 2. 2-liter engine, manual transmission, and standard low-rolling-resistance tires is 25/37 mpg city/highway. With any of the larger tire options that slips slightly to 25/35 mpg, which is still within the ranges of the likely competitors. With direct injection, fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to create a more complete burn of the air/fuel mixture. Compared to a conventional port-injection system, less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower, especially at normal cruising speeds. The cobalt ss is rated at 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, so we anticipate exciting performance. Chevrolet claims a quick 0-.

2005 buick lacrosse review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New midsize sedan is smooth, comfortable, roomy. introductionthe 2005 buick lacrosse replaces both the regal and the century as buick's midsize sedan, representing 50 percent of buick's annual car sales. Buick says it has the competition, specifically the ford five hundred, dodge intrepid, honda accord, and toyota camry, beat on a number of fronts, including quietness and overall refinement. This is a car that was well on its way to completion when gm vice-chairman and product guru bob lutz joined the company, and charged the buick team to delay the program one year, get the car right, and then introduce it. It's pretty clear that the wait, and the extra effort and money invested into the program, were worth it.  lacrosse is not an all-new car by any means. It's built in canada on gm's w-car intermediate platform, one of the oldest in the gm chassis inventory. But about 80 percent of the parts and systems underneath are new, along with new interior and exterior designs.  the lacrosse has a rich, high-quality looking interior with attractive woodgrain trim, nicely presented instruments and controls and available leather seats with nice-looking gathered stitching. Buick's quiet tuning has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in among the entire class.  the lacrosse rides smoothly and quietly, but its steering is much more precise than previous models and it turns into corners crisply with little body lean. The v6 engines offer good power, growling under acceleration, but smooth and quiet when motoring along, and the transmissions work flawlessly.  new features make a well-equipped lacrosse a safe, all-weather family car with nice conveniences. The cx 22,835) is the base model and it comes with cloth upholstery and manually operated air conditioning. The lacrosse cx is powered by a cast-iron 3. 8-liter overhead-valve v6 engine that was first introduced in buicks back in 1979, the continuously improved and now rated at a modest 200 horsepower. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are optional.  the middle model, the cxl 25,335), comes with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, abs, and quite a list of additional standard equipment. The cxl also uses the 3. 8-liter engine.  the cxs 28,335) is the performance car of the family, with gm's new high-feature 3. 6-liter v6 with modern double overhead cams and variable valve timing develops about 240 horsepower. The cxs gets its own suspension and steering system, 17-inch tires and wheels, and a raft of additional touches like driving lights under the front bumper.  the lacrosse is available with five- or six-passenger seating: either bucket seats with a center console and shifter or a 40/20/40 bench seat with the shifter on the steering column. Standard features include tilt wheel, remote keyless entry, power driver's seat, programmable power locks, power windows, and a six-speaker am/fm/cd system. All models come standard with onstar including a one-year subscription.  options include side curtain air bags 395), stabilitrak chassis control on the cxs model only 495), xm satellite radio 325 with one-year free subscription), power sunroof 900), remote starting 150), heated front seats 295), 17-inch chrome wheels 695), and a chrome package 295). A gold convenience option package 1,150) is offered with a leather steering wheel with redundant climate and audio controls, a universal transmitter, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors, six-way power passenger seat, rear park assist, and rear reading lamps. Two cast aluminum wheels are available, one 16-inch and one 17-inch. walkaroundlacrosse is unmistakably a buick sedan, with its trademark vertical bar waterfall grille, long nose, long slopes and simple body curvatures. They've added a tiny third side window behind the c-pillar to add some visual interest. About the only new design theme is at the rear, where there is a discernible dent in the decklid that ties the taillamps together. There is a single, slender chrome side spear on the doors and body in lieu of anything sportier.  the base lacrosse cx comes with 16-inch wheels and bolt-on faux alloy wheel-covers and has almost no decoration at all. Body, door, and fender gaps are noticeably smaller than on the regal and century, and the new aero headlamps are said to be 35-percent brighter. Cx models can be identified by a grained graphite-color finish on the rocker panels underneath the doors, while other models have these panels in body color.  gm's aging w-car architecture has been torn apart and put back together to improve the lacrosse's ride and handling by several orders of magnitude. The old steel front cradle has been replaced by a lighter, stronger, stiffer extruded aluminum one that holds the engine, transaxle, steering and suspension tighter, controls powertrain rocking, and weighs 20 pounds less.  buick says the new car is designed with more high-strength steel content than regal and century, a magnesium cross-car beam behind the instrument panel, another cross-car beam behind the rear seats, steel reinforcements in the rocker panels, interlocking door latch system, high-strength steel door beams, and a double-thick quiet steel floor pan and firewalls, all added in the name of crash safety and quietness. Altogether, buick says, about 40 additional pounds of sound deadeners have been added to the car, including structural foam in the front fenders. interiorthe buick designers were given a much longer wheelbase, two inches longer than the old century and regal. And all of it was dedicated to back seat legroom. My 6-foot, 4-inch frame can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room to spare now.  the lacrosse interior is altogether new and different from the cheapie regal and century rent-a-car interiors. There are fewer but larger individual pieces, built to closer tolerances, for a richer, higher quality look inside. The instruments and controls are presented in white on black, and each of the three round dials in the deeply tunneled instrument panel has a chrome ring around it. Very nicely presented, sportier-looking than previous instruments, with small-diameter chrome-ringed knobs arrayed around the dashboard.  the center stack is done in a mica-flecked flat black, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy to put through its menu, though the information panel is so glossy that it's hard to read in the morning or afternoon light. The entire dashboard is decorated with a very good imitation woodgrain material. Taken together, the system has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in in the entire class.  new optional features available on the lacrosse that were never available on the century or regal include a remote starting system that will work from up to 500 feet away, onstar, xm satellite radio, and stabilitrak, and if we were ordering a lacrosse, we would add all of these excellent systems to make a truly complete, safe and all-weather family car. driving impressionwe drove all of the lacrosse models at the car's introduction in northern michigan. Both of the available v6 engines have been tuned to give a nice, healthy growl on full throttle, but disappear into the background in high-gear cruising.  the standard 3. 8-liter engine is rated at 200 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque, a cast-iron v6 that's been fitted with electronic throttle control (etc), a stiffer crankshaft, an underhood silencer, new pulleys, new power steering, and a structural oil pan all in the name of less mechanical noise. With all of its new parts, the 3. 8 is the same gutsy v-6 it's always been, with good torque on demand, smooth, quiet operation, and 29 miles per gallon on the highway in the new car.  the new 3. 6-liter, the so-called high-feature v6, with double overhead cams and electronic throttle control has quite a bit more horsepower and torque, revs more freely, but comes only in the cxs (at a $3,000 price penalty). The final numbers are expected to be 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 230 foot-pounds of torque at 3200 rpm, and 28 mpg.  the transmissions in all three versions worked flawlessly. The optional stabilitrak suspension package comes with magnasteer ii power steering.  we found the csx more sporty to drive through the trees on an autumn day in northern michigan. The steering has the same good feel and turn-.

2008 cadillac dts review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved safety for big luxury sedan. introductioncadillac dts is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the big, luxurious, powerful, stylish machines that once made cadillac america's most-desired automobile.  the dts is a full-size luxury car with full-size american power and a warm, spacious interior. Its 115. 6-inch wheelbase would have qualified it as full-size car even in the mid-1950s.  its v8 engine develops 275 horsepower, and a higher-output version is available that delivers 292 horsepower. Though its styling is restrained, the dts is loaded with the latest technology. Yet, unlike many luxury cars these days, there's no need to study the owner's manual to make the dts do its job. This is a rational luxury car, easy to operate in addition to being large and luxurious. It handles surprisingly well given its size. It takes turns with poise and dignity, making it an enjoyable steed when the road goes curvy. The dts is front-wheel drive.  for 2008, two new options harness the latest technology to enhance safety. The lane departure warning system is designed to help drivers avoid a collision caused by an inadvertent lane change, for example if the driver drifts off to sleep. Side blind zone alert enhances awareness of objects that might otherwise escape the driver's vision, for example a car the driver simply did not know was there.  a new platinum edition is available for 2008 that comes with all the performance goodies, plus a bright and cheery handcrafted interior and special exterior trim.  the current dts was launched as a 2006 model, sporting fresh body lines, a redesigned interior, upgraded running gear, and suspension refinements,. At the same time, cadillac abandoned the 57-year-old deville nameplate. Dts now stands for the whole revised and revamped model line. All versions are powered by cadillac's 4. 6-liter northstar v8, which produces 275 horsepower in standard tune, and 292 horsepower with certain option packages. Lane departure warning and side blind zone alert are available on select models. walkaroundthe 2008 cadillac dts is a big car. Its overall length of 207. 6 inches makes it five inches longer than the escalade full-size suv, and nearly a foot longer than the sts, cadillac's next-largest sedan. It's also wide, more than two inches wider than an sts.  despite its size, however, the clean forms of the dts give it a european look, though in a distinctively american idiom. With its vertical headlights and tail lights, and its grinning egg-crate grille, the dts has acquired the design heritage of the cadillac family and adapted it to 21st century reality. It acknowledges tradition, yet remains fresh and modern. The fenders provide a purposeful stance, and the profile is slightly wedge-shaped. Seventeen-inch machined aluminum wheels come standard; 18-inch wheels are available; and those wheels can be ordered chromed. The overall look is brought together by cadillac's characteristic spline line, which rises from the top of the front fender, runs along with lower edge of the side windows and then flows over the rear fender.  the platinum edition is distinguished visually by 18-inch chrome wheels, chrome grille, chrome inserts on the exterior door handles, and a platinum badge.  cadillac boasts that the dts has some of the tightest production tolerances in the world, and it certainly looks the part of a well-honed luxury machine. The panels fit well, the paint is glossy and blemish free, and overall the dts wears its bulk well, like a fine-tailored suit. The quality of gm cars has been improving, and cadillac scores well in quality surveys. interiorthe dts cabin is roomy and luxurious. The interior was completely revised for 2006, and only detail changes have been made since then.  leather and wood abound, along with a dusting of chrome accents, creating a handsome, upmarket environment. Low-gloss surfaces, with a three-dimensional grain, were chosen for the upper instrument panel and upper doors in order to reduce glare and absorb sunlight.  three different leathers are used, depending on options and packages. The base leather is called nuance; a specially tanned leather called tehama, claimed to be exclusive to the dts, is optional. A more supple, semi-aniline tuscany hide is included in the platinum edition. The nuance interior benefits from fitment of a material crafted from a vinyl/silk blend for seatbacks and armrests. Claimed to be as durable as vinyl, it has the look and feel of leather.  the trim used on base, luxury i and luxury ii models is a good-looking faux burl wood material, while luxury iii and performance versions get a darker, genuine burled walnut. Instruments use white-on-black led readouts for speedometer, tachometer, fuel and temperature gauges.  on five-passenger models, the center console between the bucket seats houses the shifter and storage bins. On six-passenger models, the shifter is mounted on the steering column to accommodate the front bench seat, which has an integrated center armrest that transforms from a back cushion into a console with two levels of storage.  the cabin has a spacious feel and good sightlines for driver visibility. The luxury i and ii packages include a heated steering wheel on a tilting column; luxury iii and performance add a telescoping function.  the center stack design is attractive and the controls are easy to see and use.
